Sony Ericsson W980 Review

April 15th, 2010

Walkman phone really is the most popular series phone for Sony Ericsson. The successful of walkman phone is not only causing by the excellent music player and sound quality but also the features that come along with the phone. And the Sony Ericsson W980 that released last month, which is come with the 8G internal memory really make it stand out from the crowd.

The design of SE W980 is terrific. As a clamshell phone, Sony Ericsson W980 has the rather compact dimensions of 92 x 46 x 16.9 mm, with the weight of 100g. There is an external 262K colors and a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels TFT display on the front which is the audio menu visualize. The display is blended so perfectly with the opaque mirror surface. You won’t notice there has a display on the front when it is off. Also, there are 7 touch-sensitive keys below the display which is music player control. So, you can access and navigate your music player without even opening the flip.

The primary 240 x 320 pixels, 2.2 inches display which will appear on the upper part once the phone is open phone, also able to deliver an excellent quality of image. The navigational buttons and the keyboard are below it and you will notice that the buttons of the keypad is in round shape. That is just fitting the design of the rest. The phone has quite some tacky effect to add zing to your listening experience, the clear bar located at the bottom lights up and flashes, creating a disco effect of sorts.

AS a walkman phone, SE W980 no doubt can deliver decent sound quality. The Walkman player is the latest third version which is support MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA and also the ShakeME feature. With the 8G of internal memory, you are no worry about your music files storage. However, unfortunately the phone doesn’t support external memory card. There is no way for you to store your multimedia files if it is exceed the 8G of limitations.

There is some addition in the features of W980. The most remarkable feature of the phone would be the FM transmitter. SE W980 is proudly to be the first phone that provides this feature. You can use it to broadcast your music in your phone and shared to your friend in house, office, car and etc. Other specs like 3.6Mbps HSDPA data transmission, quad-band connectivity, built-in accelerometer, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, 3D Java games, twin cameras for video calling, an FM radio.

So far Sony Ericsson sounds perfect on the paper. However, the 3 megapixel camera with no auto focus nor flash would bring the phone to the downside. Also, I prefer the phone is completed with the GPS function since it become common features for high-end phone. Anyway, every phone has their annoyance. If you just want a phone that can play as your mp3 player role, then Sony Ericsson W980 is definitely can be your choice.
